Delwin Vriend never set out to be a human rights activist — but his decision to challenge his firing for being gay set in motion a legal battle that changed Canada and the world.
A quarter-century ago, the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision in Vriend v. Alberta read sexual orientation into Alberta’s human rights legislation. That ruling helped lay the groundwork for key advances, including the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada and broader LGBTQ+ equality globally.
