OCT 18 – The Plate Scrapers with the Clendenen Brothers

Friday, October 18, 2024 at 8:00 pm

The Plate Scrapers in front of schoolbus

The Plate Scrapers are a band that strives to maintain a healthy equilibrium between their diverse musical backgrounds and the traditional Appalachian sounds, The Plate Scrapers have wowed audiences across the entire spectrum. This progressively minded Bluegrass act truly feels at home on any stage. They’ve provided direct support for bluegrass legends such as The Seldom Scene, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, and Larry Keel. On the other side of that coin, they aren’t afraid to get weird at a late night festival slot and have become well known for their tastefully balanced and refreshingly diverse song-writing. Catch their live show and you’ll be sure to receive a full helping of hard-driving bluegrass favorites and heart-wrenching country ballads. Dig into their recorded originals, however, and you’ll find tracks ranging from thoughtful folk lyricism to gritty tales of harrowing adventure.

Clendenen Brothers

Nate Clendenen of the Clendenen Brothers is an American singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and performer from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Steeped in influences all across the board, his generational roots extend deep into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, while his blood runs thick with the saltwater of his tidal home. Growing up on large parts of bluegrass, rock, country, reggae and blues, Nate now performs in several different outfits drawing on that spectrum.

OCT 13 – Rural Runners

Sunday, October 13, 2024 at noon

Film followed by discussion

Free admission

Sponsored by Two Rivers Treads

Film: In 2020, Chloe Maxmin, a 28-year-old climate activist, became the youngest woman elected to the state senate in Maine history. Chloe and her campaign manager, Canyon Woodward, rewrote the strategy for progressive success in rural America and won two campaigns in red districts where they were expected to lose. Rural Runners follows Chloe and Canyon on the campaign trail alongside Canyon’s burgeoning rise as a champion ultra-distance runner. Their approach rehumanizes our deeply divided political system, offering hope and a path toward a healthier democracy. (Credit: Gnarly Bay)

Panel Discussion: Following the film there will be a panel discussion with Rural Runners’ own Chloe Maxmin and Canyon Woodward joined by local candidates Maria Russo and Lucia Valentine.

National Theatre Live – On Screen

Shepherdstown Opera House and the Contemporary American Theater Festival join forces to present the next best thing to live theater in Shepherdstown. From the UK’s National Theatre, filmed live in London’s West End, see the best of British theater right here in Shepherdstown!

Frankenstein

By Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley

A sublime start to the spooky season.

Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), Frankenstein features Benedict Cumberbatch (Hamlet, BBC’s Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) alternating between the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’ s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the increasingly desperate and vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil, are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic tale.

Captured live on stage in 2011, this thrilling, sold-out production became an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world.
