“We Will Not Be Silent”

A play by David Meyers

Town Run Theater Company Artistic Director: Joe Yates

Based on the true story of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose resistance group, this powerful drama explores the courage of young people who risked everything to speak out against Nazi tyranny in World War II Germany.

In Munich, Germany, February 1943, Sophie Magdalena Scholl, age 21, and her brother Hans were arrested and charged with treason, accused of being members of the White Rose resistance group. We Will Not Be Silent portrays her interrogation. A proud member of the Hitler Youth as a child, Sophie saw her world change, twisted by evil. History has called her a “Courageous Voice Against Tyranny” and the “Bravest Girl of World War II.” Sophie just wants to go home, to live her life as it was. To have a family, to grow old. And all she needs to do this, according to her interrogator, is to name names. Or die. Painfully. What would you do?

The play had its world premiere in 2017 at the Contemporary American Theater Festival, and was later pulled from circulation by the playwright when he felt it was being commercialized. We have obtained special permission directly from the playwright to bring this play back to Shepherdstown, making this the debut performance of his rewritten script.
