Frank Capra’s beloved classic follows Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), a wide-eyed idealist appointed to the U.S. Senate, who finds himself up against the very corruption he once admired from afar. Nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor, the film had the misfortune of going up against Gone with the Wind in 1939 — a year so stacked that losing Best Picture was nothing to be ashamed of.
